Programs Supported by CELT

CELT plays an active role in supporting many of the campus and system-wide programs and initiatives whose ultimate goal is improving student learning. Our work in supporting these programs is intended to help campus educators bring about changes in their teaching such that it directly and noticeably impacts student learning.

Communication Across the Curriculum

Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC for short) is a new, campus-wide curricular and professional development program at HSU designed to provide support for faculty interested in integrating written and oral communication into their courses and fostering improved student writing and speaking skills across the disciplines. CAC expands the writing across the curriculum (WAC) program to include oral communication as well.

ELIXR

The central focus of ELIXR (http://elixr.merlot.org/case-stories/) is sharing digital case stories of exemplary faculty who have adopted new teaching approaches. ELIXR digital case stories illustrate exemplary teaching practices and highlight different disciplinary approaches to pedagogical innovation, relevant teaching contexts, unique design/assessment methods, and student-centered teaching approaches. Viewing the changed classroom strategy through a multimedia case story lens provides an example of how a new pedagogical strategy (e.g., active learning, universal design for learning, integrative learning) can be implemented and a course redesigned to promote significant learning.

Faculty Development Small Grants Program: Supported through the Faculty Development Committee, Faculty Development Small Grants are offered, Faculty Development Awards are intended to support faculty efforts at improving their teaching practice. Applications for reimbursement of costs related to attendance at any conference, workshop, etc. aimed at primarily enhancing instructional effectiveness are appropriate for a Faculty Development award.

Mentoring

The New Faculty Mentoring Program (NFMP) is a voluntary program through which experienced faculty at Humboldt State University (HSU) knowledgeable about the campus and academic life are matched with new faculty to orient them to HSU, inform them about campus support services, and assist them in the early stages of their academic careers at HSU. This program is not meant to be a substitute for existing mentoring programs at the department level but can be a supplement to such programs.

Mid-Semester Evaluations

Mid-semester evaluations are available to provide professional and objective feedback about your classroom approach and instruction. They are completely confidential and separate from retention and tenure, take 20-30 minutes of class time and allow you over six weeks to make the desired changes. Mid-semester evaluations are also beneficial in that they empower students by giving them a voice in their education.

New Faculty Orientation

The HSU New Faculty Orientation (NFO) program is designed to warmly welcome new faculty to all aspects of life at HSU. The Center for Excellence in Learning & Teaching sponsors this interactive, informative, and essential introduction to life at HSU for ALL new full and part-time faculty.
